EDUCATION AT THE MUSEUM

Engaging learners with lessons of the past guiding them to understand their present and envision their future.

School Workshops

Grades K- 5: History Explorers

This program features a visit to the Folsom History Museum, a short walking tour of Historic Folsom, and activities in The Square. Folsom History Museum: A hosted museum tour with student guide, a group discussion, hands-on activities, and photo ops; highlighting historical points in Old Folsom with archival photos presented. The Square: Groups rotate through blacksmith demonstrations, hands-on gold panning lessons, and a walking tour of large-scale collection items focusing on Folsom’s industries.

Duration: 2 hours

Cost: $10 per student; 1:6 ratio for free adults, $6 for any additional Maximum of 2 classes per program.

 

Grades 6 -12: Unlocking the Archives

This program features a guided investigation of Folsom's Historic District and a visit to the Folsom History Museum. Guided Investigation: With a historic map in hand, students investigate the past through a guided walk in Folsom's Historic District. Using archival sources, a timeline of the District's past is created. Buildings, businesses, and people are discussed, helping trace the evolution of the town. Folsom History Museum: Hosted Museum tour with student guide provided, a group discussion, and photo ops.

Duration: 90 minutes

Cost: $10 per student; 1:6 ratio for free adults; $6 for any additional Maximum of 24 participants.

Add on workshops

Duration: 1 hour

Cost: $240 per class. Maximum of 30 students.

Moving the Land

Grades 2 - 3

What features play into where people settle and how they live? Through this investigation, students discover the importance of resources. Using maps and tools, students stake a claim in the gold fields, find a spot to farm the land, and choose a site to build a hotel for travelers. Students leave with gold panning finds, a starter garden, and a plan for their town.

Investigating the Source

Grades 4 - 5

Become a history detective. Reconstruct the stories of the Pony Express and transcontinental railroad through photographs and other historical sources. Learn to question what the source is and its value, a skill all historians need. Students take home a journal of their findings and a new perspective on how history is uncovered.

Homeschools

 All programs can be formatted for homeschool groups at appropriate grade levels.

Cost: $10 per student; $6 per adult

Maximum of up to 36 students for school experience; 24 participants for school walking tour, & 30 students for add-on workshops.
